Edison, New Jersey
Township of Edison

Edison is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, in the New York City metropolitan area. Situated in northcentral New Jersey, Edison lies along the Raritan Bayshore. As of the 2010 United States Census, Edison had a total population of 99,967,[10][11][12] retaining its position as the fifth-most populous municipality in New Jersey.[21] The 2010 population reflected an increase of 2,280 (+2.3%) from the 97,687 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 9,007 (+10.2%) from the 88,680 counted in 1990.[22] Edison’s population has been above the 100,000 threshold since 2010, increasing by 2.5% to a Census-estimated 102,450 in 2017.[13]

What is now Edison Township was originally incorporated as Raritan Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1870, from portions of both Piscataway Township and Woodbridge Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Metuchen on March 20, 1900, and Highland Park on March 15, 1905. The name was officially changed to Edison Township on November 10, 1954, in honor of inventor Thomas Edison, who had his main laboratory in the Menlo Park section of the township.[23]

Edison was ranked the 28th most-livable small city in the United States by CNN Money Magazine, and second in New Jersey in 2006 in Money Magazine’s “Best Places To Live”.[24] In 2008, two years later, Money Magazine ranked the township 35th out of the top 100 places to live in the United States.[25] In the 2006 survey of America’s Safest Cities, the township was ranked 23rd, out of 371 cities included nationwide, in the 13th annual Morgan Quitno survey.[26] In 2009, Edison was ranked as one of “America’s 10 Best Places to Grow Up” by U.S. News & World Report. The rankings focused on low crime, strong schools, green spaces, and abundance of recreational activities.[27]

The Edison era

In 1876, Thomas Edison set up his home and research laboratory in New Jersey on the site of an unsuccessful real estate development in Raritan Township called “Menlo Park“, (currently located in Edison State Park). While there he earned the nickname “the Wizard of Menlo Park.” Before his death at age 83 in 1931, the prolific inventor amassed a record 1,093 patents for creations including the phonograph, a stock ticker, the motion-picture camera, the incandescent light bulb, a mechanical vote counter, the alkaline storage battery including one for an electric car, and the first commercial electric light.[30]

The Menlo Park lab was significant in that was one of the first laboratories to pursue practical, commercial applications of research.[31] It was in his Menlo Park laboratory that Thomas Edison came up with the phonograph and a commercially viable incandescent light bulb filament. Christie Street was the first street in the world to use electric lights for illumination.[32] Edison subsequently left Menlo Park and moved his home and laboratory to West Orange in 1886.[33]

Edison hosts one of the region’s main centers of Asian American cultural diversity.[43][44][45]

As part of the 2010 Census, 28.3% of Edison residents identified themselves as being Indian American.[10] In the 2000 Census, 17.75% of Edison residents identified themselves as being Indian American, the highest percentage of Indian American people of any place in the United States with 1,000 or more residents identifying their ancestry.[46]

Edison is also developing a sprawling suburban Chinatown.[47]

2010 census

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 99,967 people, 34,972 households, and 26,509 families residing in the township. The population density was 3,339.0 per square mile (1,289.2/km2). There were 36,302 housing units at an average density of 1,212.5 per square mile (468.1/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 44.10% (44,084) White, 7.05% (7,046) Black or African American, 0.23% (229) Native American, 43.19% (43,177) Asian, 0.04% (36) Pacific Islander, 2.72% (2,718) from other races, and 2.68% (2,677) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.11% (8,112) of the population.[10]

The Census Bureau’s 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $86,725 (with a margin of error of +/- $3,000) and the median family income was $100,008 (+/- $2,624). Males had a median income of $66,898 (+/- $4,094) versus $50,953 (+/- $1,462) for females. The per capita income for the township was $36,464 (+/- $1,184). About 3.5% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.[58]

A number of production facilities in and around the area, included Edison Assembly, Ford Motor Company’s production plant for Rangers, Mustangs, Pintos, Mercurys, and Lincolns. Other notable companies included Frigidaire‘s air-conditioner plant in Edison, Siemens in Edison.

Starting in the 2000s, manufacturing began to leave Central Jersey, and many facilities closed and moved overseas.[59][60][61] The Ford plant was demolished by 2008 and plans were made for retail and hotel development at the site.[62]

Corporate presence

Majesco Entertainment, a video game company, has its corporate headquarters in Edison.[63] Other companies have warehouse operations within Edison. These companies include the Italian food producer and importer Colavita, as well as the regional hubs for FedEx, UPS, and Newegg. In addition Edison is home to the state’s largest private convention center, the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, located within the Raritan Center Business Park.[64] Raritan Center itself is the largest industrial park on the east side of the Mississippi River. The United States headquarters of the international company Zylog Systems is located in Edison,[65] as is the headquarters of the e-commerce companies Boxed and Bare Necessities.[66],_New_Jersey

About Me.  My daughter Lisa lived in Edison, New Jersey on Willard Dunham Drive, before she was hospitalized for the last time, because of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) complications, and died in JFK Medical Center, in Edison.  My daughter Lisa and my daughter Leslie, were born in Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City.  My youngest daughter, who has asked me to not mention her name, was born in Christ Hospital in Jersey City.  I was treated for a nervous breakdown in Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey.

(As shameful as I feel, I must eventually document, in detail, why my two daughters from my first marriage did not live with me, though of course it will only be my side of the story; I have no complaint against my first husband, or my mother-in-law or my sisters-in-law.  I’ve made so many mistakes in life, even after I was baptized, Why did God choose me, of all people, to do this work that He has assigned me to do?)

When we (Nat and I, and my youngest daughter) lived at 201 St. Paul’s Avenue, Journal Square was not yet a heavily populated Indian community.

The Labor Bank Building at 26 Journal Square was the city’s first skyscraper.

Journal Square is a business district, residential area, and transportation hub in Jersey City, New Jersey, which takes its name from the newspaper Jersey Journal whose headquarters were located there from 1911 to 2013.[1] The “square” itself is at the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenue. The broader area extends to and includes Bergen Square, McGinley Square, India Square, the Five Corners and parts of the Marion Section.[2] Many local, state, and federal agencies serving Hudson County maintain offices in the district.

Nisan (or Nissan; Hebrew: נִיסָן‎, Standard Nisan Tiberian Nîsān) on the Assyrian calendar is the first month, and on the Hebrew calendar is the first month of the ecclesiastical year and the seventh month (eighth, in leap year) of the civil year. The name of the month is of AssyrianBabylonian origin; in the Torah it is called the month of the Aviv. (e.g. Exodus 13:4 בְּחֹ֖דֶשׁ הָאָבִֽיב ḥōḏeš hā-’āḇîḇ) Assyrians today refer to the month as the “month of happiness.” It is a spring month of 30 days. Nisan usually falls in March–April on the Gregorian calendar. In the Book of Esther in the Tanakh it is referred to as Nisan. Karaite Jews interpret it as referring to the month in which barley was ripe.

Jesus’ death and resurrection during the Passover

Wednesday twilight – Thursday sunset, 14th of Nissan, Passover Begins at twilight on the 14th of the first month (Leviticus 23:5)

The postexilic name of the first Jewish lunar month of the sacred calendar, corresponding to part of March and part of April. (Ne 2:1; Es 3:7) This month, first called “Abib,” was originally considered the seventh month and is evidently the month referred to at Genesis 8:4. At the time of the Exodus from Egypt, Jehovah assigned this month to be “the first of the months of the year.” (Ex 12:2; 13:4; Nu 33:3) From then on, a distinction existed between a sacred calendar instituted by Jehovah and the previous secular calendar.—See CALENDAR; ABIB.

The weather was often quite cool during this spring month, and in Jerusalem, fires were lit at night to provide warmth. (Joh 18:18) Snow has even fallen in Jerusalem as late as April 6, as it did in 1949. Nisan came at about the close of the rainy season, and the latter or spring rains were counted on to bring the grain to fullness prior to the harvest. (De 11:14; Ho 6:3; Jer 5:24) At this time of the year the Jordan River was normally at flood stage. (Jos 3:15; 1Ch 12:15) The barley harvest began along the coastal plains, and down in the subtropical Jordan Valley the wheat was reaching maturity. (Ru 1:22; 2:23) About this time, harvested flax on Rahab’s rooftop in Jericho provided a place for the Israelite spies to hide.—Jos 2:6; 4:19.

Adjusting the Lunar Calendar. God’s command required that the Israelites offer up a sheaf of the firstfruits of their harvest on the 16th day of Nisan (Abib) and that, on the 50th day thereafter, they offer up a second grain offering. These offerings corresponded naturally with the barley and wheat harvests, respectively. This precept made essential an adjustment in the calendar of lunar months used by the Israelites. There was need to compensate for the difference of 11 1⁄4 days between the full solar year and the shorter lunar year. Otherwise, within the space of three years, the month of Nisan would arrive some 33 days earlier in the season and far ahead of the barley harvest. The Bible record does not specify what method was originally used by the Israelites to accomplish such coordination, but the evidence indicates that a 13th month was added every two or three years to restore the seasons to their proper position in the calendar year. It seems likely that this was determined by simple observation, relating the new moon to the vernal, or spring, equinox of the sun, which comes about March 21 of each year. If the new moon that would ordinarily mark the start of the month of Nisan (Abib) was too distant from the time of the spring equinox, then the month was counted as a 13th or intercalary month, and Nisan began with the following new moon. It was not until the fourth century C.E. that a definitely standardized calendar was adopted by the Jews.

The first of Nisan’s festivals was the Passover, originally celebrated in Egypt; it came on the 14th of the month and included the sacrifice of the paschal lamb. (Ex 12:2-14; Le 23:5; De 16:1) The following day was the beginning of the week-long Festival of Unfermented Cakes, running from the 15th to the 21st of the month. On the 16th of Nisan came the offering of the firstfruits of the barley harvest.—Ex 12:15-20; 23:15; 34:18; Le 23:6-11.

Lord’s Evening Meal Instituted. Over 15 centuries after the Exodus, on Nisan 14 of the year 33 C.E., Jesus gathered with his 12 apostles in Jerusalem to celebrate the last valid Passover, and then, having dismissed the traitorous Judas, he proceeded to institute the memorial of his death by means of the Lord’s Supper, or Evening Meal. (Mt 26:17-30; 1Co 11:23-25) Before Nisan 14 passed, he died as the Lamb of God. On Nisan 16, the day the priest at the temple waved the firstfruits of the barley harvest, Jesus, as the firstfruits of the resurrection, was raised up to life again.—Lu 23:54–24:7; 1Co 15:20.

In obedience to Christ’s instructions, “Keep doing this in remembrance of me,” the 14th day of Nisan continues to be observed by his followers till this day as the time for memorializing Christ’s death.—Lu 22:19, 20; see LORD’S EVENING MEAL.

For example: I was healing a few people last night.

They considered me as a healer because of these actions. I don’t consider myself as healer, but I do heal others. I make this distinction, since, I help others along the way, not to be a healer, but because it’s weaved into part of my nature. In the process of change, our own transformation actually ripples out to help shift others into a better state of being. More pertinent to this post: Healing provides comfort and it’s a tool to help others relax into a shape of being they desire to be within.

People assume, we must heal the world, that we must embrace enlightenment to fulfill the universe with peace… To flood the world in a rapture of belief and bliss… To make and fulfill into a “comfortable” happy heaven for us to meld into. In effect take the shape of an outside comfort rather than accepting and freely exploring the variations of our own form.
