Revolutionary Suicide is an autobiography written by Huey P. Newton, co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party (BPP). The Chief ideologue and strategist of the BPP, Newton taught himself how to read during his last year of high school, which led to his enrollment in Merrit College in Oakland in 1966; the same year he formed what was then known as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. The Party urged members to challenge the status quo with armed patrols of the impoverished streets of black Oakland, and to form coalitions with other oppressed groups. The party spread across America and internationally as well, forming coalitions with the Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cubans.[1] The book was republished by Penguin books and includes an introduction by Fredrika Newton (Huey’s widow).

3 Special Forces Troops Killed and 2 Are Wounded in an Ambush in Niger

WASHINGTON — Three United States Army Special Forces were killed and two were wounded on Wednesday in an ambush in Niger while on a training mission with troops from that nation in northwestern Africa, American military officials said.

“We can confirm reports that a joint U.S. and Nigerien patrol came under hostile fire in southwest Niger,” Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Falvo, a spokesman for the United States Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, said in an email.

All five American soldiers were Green Berets, said two United States military officials. The attack took place 120 miles north of Niamey, the capital of Niger, near the border with Mali, where militants with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an affiliate of Al Qaeda, have conducted cross-border raids. Niger’s troops were also believed to have suffered casualties, but details were not immediately known.

The deaths represent the first American casualties under hostile fire in a mission in which United States Special Forces have provided training and security assistance to the Nigerien armed forces, including support for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. A Special Forces soldier died in a vehicle accident in Niger in February.

Details of the late-afternoon ambush were sketchy. Soldiers from the 3rd Special Forces Group were assisting their Nigerien counterparts with counterterrorism training when they came under attack in a remote part of the country. As of late Wednesday, there had been no claims of responsibility.

In his first eight months in office, Mr. Trump’s top military officials have shown few signs that they want to back away from President Barack Obama’s strategy to train, equip and otherwise support indigenous armies and security forces to fight their own wars instead of deploying large American forces to far-flung hot spots, including the Sahel, a vast area on the southern flank of the Sahara that stretches from Senegal to Sudan.

And that is what is happening in Niger, a desperately poor, landlocked country twice the size of California that is struggling, even with assistance from the United States and France, to stem a flow of insurgents across Niger’s lightly guarded borders with Mali, Nigeria and Libya.

But unlike recent commando raids in Somalia or Reaper drone strikes in Libya, the deadly ambush on Wednesday in a remote desert area came during what American military officials said was a routine training mission — not a combat operation — and yet the casualties by both American and Nigerien forces underscore the inherent risks of operating in a potentially hostile environment.

“These militants have proven remarkably resilient, exploiting local and/or ethnic grievances to embed themselves into communities as well as political borders and differences to escape capture,” said J. Peter Pham, a vice president at the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center in Washington. “It was no accident that this attack took place near Niger’s border with Mali, an area that has seen numerous incidents in recent years.”

In May, a member of the Navy SEALs was killed and two other American service members were wounded in a raid in Somalia, the first American combat fatality there since the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” battle.

Since 2013, unarmed American drones have soared skyward from a secluded military airfield in Niamey, starting surveillance missions of 10 hours or more to track fighters affiliated with Al Qaeda and other militants in Mali.

Over the years, MQ-9 Reapers that have been based there stream live video and data from other sensors to American analysts working with French commanders, who say the aerial intelligence has been critical to their success in driving jihadists from a vast desert refuge in northern Mali.

The United States is building a $50 million drone base in Agadez, Niger. When completed next year, it will allow Reaper surveillance drones to fly from hundreds of miles closer to southern Libya, to monitor Islamic State insurgents flowing south and other extremists flowing north from the Sahel region.

Lawmakers Push Trump to Release JFK Assassination Files

Bipartisan group introduce resolutions ahead of October deadline

Senior lawmakers are calling on President Donald Trump to allow the release of remaining government records on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Resolutions introduced in the House and Senate would call on the president to allow release of documents held by the National Archives and Records Administration, and for the Archives to work to meet a statutory deadline that arrives later in October.

The deadline occurs because it will be the 25th anniversary of the signing of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act.

The leaders of the Senate resolution are Judiciary Chairman Charles E. Grassley of Iowa and Democratic Sen. Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, who is a former chairman of the committee.

“The assassination of President Kennedy was one of the most shocking and tragic events in our nation’s history,” Leahy said in a statement. “Americans have the right to know what our government knows. Transparency is crucial for our country to fully reckon with this national tragedy, and that is the purpose of these resolutions.”
Grassley expressed a similar sentiment in his statement.

“Transparency in government is critical not only to ensuring accountability; it’s also essential to understanding our nation’s history. The assassination of President Kennedy occurred at a pivotal time for our nation, and nearly 54 years later, we are still learning the details of how our government responded and what it may have known beforehand. Americans deserve a full picture of what happened that fateful day in November 1963,” Grassley said.

North Carolina Republican Rep. Walter B. Jones and New York Democratic Rep. Louise M. Slaughter are leading the House versions of the resolutions.

The Kennedy assassination and related conspiracy theories made an unexpected appearance in the chaos of the 2016 presidential race.

Trump made a bizarre accusation highlighting the National Enquirer’s publication of a photo the tabloid purported to be of the father of campaign rival and Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz with Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.“To me, the tragedy that took place in Dallas continues to raise many questions that go unanswered,” Jones said in a statement. “After 54 years, there is no reason, for the sake of honesty and integrity in America, that the facts of the JFK assassination should not be made public. Virgil once said, ‘Evil is nourished and grows by concealment.’ It’s time to reveal what happened that awful afternoon in 1963.”

Deadly Ambush of Green Berets in Niger Belies a ‘Low-Risk’ Mission

The American team leaders told their superiors in seeking approval for the mission that there was a “low risk” of hostile activity in the region 120 miles north of Niamey, Niger’s capital, according to a senior United States military official briefed on the mission planning.

Late Wednesday afternoon, that mission proved anything but low risk. The patrol was ambushed by what commanders believe was a heavily armed Qaeda force from Mali, leaving three Americans dead and two others wounded. The combat casualties were the first that the United States has suffered in a widening counterterrorism mission in Niger, in northwest Africa.

Pentagon officials expressed shock on Thursday at the deaths during such a routine mission. The brazen daytime attack raised serious questions about how the Special Forces — elite Green Berets who have spent years operating in shadowy combat zones — conduct threat assessments in the country and how their chain of command approves them.

The concerns are particularly acute given that the ambush took place near the village of Tongo Tongo, just inside Niger in a region recently destabilized by cross-border jihadist attacks on the Nigerien army and refugee camps. In mid-June, the Nigerien army mounted an operation in this same northern Tillaberi region to take on the jihadists.

American military advisers are playing an essential role in combat zones around the world, including Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. But in countries like Niger, a vast, largely desert nation with porous borders that terrorists can easily traverse, these trainers must strike a balance between offering instruction in a real-world counterterrorism environment and taking appropriate precautions against violent regional insurgencies.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the Pentagon’s Africa Command said the Americans were providing “advice and assistance to Nigerien security force counterterror operations” when they came under fire. Two other American troops, members of the 3rd Special Forces Group, were also wounded and a Nigerien soldier was killed.

“Our country has just been attacked once more by terrorist groups, an assault which sadly has resulted in a large number of casualties,” President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger said at a regional meeting on Thursday in Niamey.

The firefight lasted roughly 30 minutes and involved less than a dozen United States troops and more than 20 Nigerien soldiers. The official said they ran into a large group of militants traveling in pickup trucks mounted with machine guns, known as technicals, that took them by surprise. United States drones were in the area, but it is unclear how close they were at the time of the attack given the mission’s perceived low risk.

French attack helicopters responded to calls for help but it is unknown if they fired on the militants or only made a show of force. The wounded were evacuated to the capital of Niamey and the wounded Americans were then put on a plane to Germany where they were receiving medical treatment.

The military has not yet released the names of the American soldiers killed, pending notification of their families. Dana W. White, the chief Pentagon spokeswoman, would not give new details about the episode in response to questions on Thursday, citing “ongoing operations.”

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, officials believe that Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb was involved. The extremist group, pushed from its territory in northern Mali after the French military intervened in 2012, has been increasingly active in recent years. Since 2016 the group has staged a number of attacks across the broader Sahel, a stretch of territory that runs from Senegal to Sudan, and routinely ambushes United Nations peacekeepers in the region.

Since 2013, unmanned American aircraft have launched from a clandestine airfield in Niamey. Americans are also helping construct a $ million drone base for French and American aircraft in Agadez. When completed next year, it will allow Reaper surveillance drones to fly from hundreds of miles closer to southern Libya, to monitor Islamic State insurgents flowing south and other extremists flowing north from the Sahel region.

More than two dozen Army Special Forces — like those attacked on Wednesday — train the Nigerien military and help with intelligence gathering for the local forces.

The deaths of three Americans in the country highlight the inherent risk associated with conducting even noncombat missions in a region beset with violence and a growing assortment of militant groups. In May, a member of the Navy SEALs was killed and two other American troops were wounded during a raid in Somalia, the first American combat fatality there since 1993.

“The clash demonstrates the seriousness of the militant threat in the region,” Michael R. Shurkin, a senior political scientist at RAND and former C.I.A. analyst, said of Wednesday’s ambush. “Since Trump took office, U.S. policy in the region has been more or less adrift. This could force someone finally to take the tiller by the hand.”
